Services

The Forensic Hospital is an essential component of an integrated State-wide Forensic Mental Health service. It will provide high quality mental health care in a high security setting. The number of forensic mental health patients in NSW has been increasing in recent years with health care being provided in a custodial setting as the only option. The new forensic inpatient facility is the most recent addition to a comprehensive state wide forensic mental health framework that currently includes court liaison, community forensic mental health services and correctional ambulatory care.

The Hospital consists of five units providing inpatient care to adults, both male and female, young people and adolescents and includes a Long Stay Unit. The Long Stay Unit provides rehabilitation services to forensic patients some of whom will progress towards transfer to conditions of lower security.

The new Forensic Hospital principally focuses on mentally ill patients within the criminal justice system, but it also has capacity for mental health patients from across NSW whose management requires a high level of security and a high clinician to patient ratio.

The Forensic Hospital is working in close collaboration with the Justice Health Mental Health Screening Units at the Metropolitan Reception and Remand Centre Silverwater, the Mental Health Unit of the Long Bay Hospital and the Area Health Service forensic units at Cumberland and Morisset Hospitals, and provides a range of care options for forensic patients.
