Community, Custody & Courts

Our range of services and levels of expertise are continuing to expand rapidly as we develop health interventions that allow us to improve the health and wellbeing of those affected by incarceration and detention. Justice Health service provision has now evolved to extend far beyond the walls of the custodial setting. In addition to those in custody or detention, our consumers in the court and community settings now include released individuals, the families of inmates and detainees, populations at high risk of incarceration and the mentally ill.

Clinical Programs

The major clinical programs of Justice Health are Mental Health, Drug & Alcohol, Primary Health, and Population Health. Within these services special emphasis is given to services for women, adolescent detainees and Aboriginals, with specific programs and services dedicated to these areas.

At the time of their reception, all inmates and detainees are given an extensive health assessment, with longer term inmates and detainees receiving a health plan after one month. This assessment and our strong links with other Area Health Services are keys to ensuring continuity of care for our patients, no matter how brief the inmate or detainee's contact is with Justice Health.
