The Forensic Hospital is 135 bed high secure mental health facility for mentally ill patients who have been in contact with the criminal justice system, and high risk civil patients. The hospital is an integral part of the Forensic Mental Health Network. It provides specialist mental health care to adult men and women, and adolescents.
The hospital is located in Malabar, and is operated by Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network on behalf of NSW Health.
All clinical services are provided by the Network through a multi-disciplinary team of Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Professionals.
The hospital was purpose-designed to enhance the delivery of contemporary clinical programs. It operates six accommodation units covering the clinical spectrum from high dependency, acute care, continuing care to long stay and rehabilitation.
- Austinmer Women: 17 bed acute unit
- Austinmer Adolescent: 6 bed acute unit
- Bronte Male: 33 bed high dependency and acute unit
- Clovelly: 27 bed extended care unit
- Dee Why: 32 bed long stay unit
- Elouera: 20 bed rehabilitation unit.
Patients cared for within the hospital include:
- Forensic patients: persons handed a verdict of act proven but not criminally responsible due to reasons of mental health impairment or cognitive impairment, or who are unfit to be tried for an offence due to mental health or cognitive impairment
- Correctional patients: sentenced and remanded inmates who become mentally ill while in custody and require treatment in a mental health facility
- Civil patients: persons who are clinically assessed as posing an increased risk towards others and who require specialist mental health services to prevent their future involvement in the criminal justice system.
